Company Selection Update

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

MMA selects companies with solid financial performance and whose behaviors best reflect positive values such as a respect for human dignity, a concern for peace and justice, environmental stewardship, and caring for communities. Recognizing that no company is perfect, we seek to carefully balance the need for productive portfolios with a desire to avoid industries such as gambling, alcohol and tobacco production, abortifacient manufacture, and weapons and military contracting. MMA Praxis also seeks to avoid those companies with the most egregious environmental and human rights records.

By being mindful about our company selection, we honor God’s values by seeking to focus our investments in companies that strengthen rather than weaken all in God’s Creation.

MMA has recently approved new domestic and international restricted lists. Companies on MMA’s restricted list are unavailable for investment because they violate MMA’s values and social screens. This update, completed in the summer, includes a mix of companies leaving and entering MMA’s investment universe.

Suzuki Motor Corporation is now on MMA’s restricted list due to its declining human rights record, particularly in the treatment of workers in its supply chain. Spartan Motors, Inc. has also been added to the restricted list now that it has been identified as a significant supplier to the military.

Companies removed from the restricted list include Petrobras, Brazil’s national oil company, and Sino-Forest Corporation, a Canadian forester. Both companies are now available for investment due to substantial environmental improvements.
