Dynegy, a US power company, dropped its joint project with LS Power to build five new coal-fired power plants last Friday. Dynegy had previously been labeled “the next King Coal” by citizens and environmental groups since it was proposing the largest expansion of coal-power of any company in the US. Read more here.

From a stewardship investing perspective, this is a positive development, and it signals a new awareness among power companies about climate change and the potential for greenhouse gas regulation. Dynegy’s plans will make it more difficult for other power companies to defend their new coal plant ambitions, and may help them prioritize energy efficiency and renewable energy.
